Capturing God’s Heart – Difficulty – Volume 10

Today I am sharing about Difficulty, and some of what I have come to find about the Lord through the hard things of our lives.

We all have trouble in this life. Each of us experience things that are simply difficult. In fact the Bible speaks quite a bit to difficulty. Jesus said this:

“I have told you all this so that you may have peace in me. Here on earth you will have many trials and sorrows. But take heart, because I have overcome the world.” John 16:33

I used to think that God was going to fix all my difficulty. That the overcoming that Christ spoke of was to do with the stuff of this world. That God was simply magic applied to my life. That I could pray and all of a sudden the hard stuff would go away.

Live to Win

Life is a test

Presuming that something matters,

Each test gauges our progress,

Ensures our movement, pace and process.

Tests are for us,

And tests are for instructors.

“How might we advance this person?”

“Is this person ready for promotion?”

It doesn’t matter the size of the test,

The importance of the test,

All of life is a test.

Will we give it our best shot,

Or will we cry foul?

From day one I’ve told my kids,

“Govern yourself or I will govern you.”

“Control yourself or I will control you. Which would you rather have?”

A test,

How will you do?

Will you take the challenge,

Or cry foul?

With equal opportunity for success,

All of us can prove ourselves in some way.

Life is in fact begging us to prove ourselves.

The gifts and talent that are inherent in you,

Must follow their own sequence in the releasing,

Their own path revealed.

Is the challenge taken,

Are the gifts revealed,

Or do we cry foul?

A sky-scraper must be preceded by a very large hole and substantial foundation,

That bridge across the large river takes years of infrastructure being built,

Can the company last the digging,

Can the workers stand the years?

In each of our own lives, we are the company, we are the worker,

Can we stand the heat.

Or will we cry foul?

Heat endured strengthens our stamina,

Veins come out as gold,

Dross is burned away,

Our resilience is established,

Our inner muscles of heart and soul refined and polished.

Will we endure the test,

Or cry foul?

Tested and proven to handle some,

We are given more,

Tested and proven to handle more,

We are given much.

Tests of attitude,

Courage,

Fortitude,

Stamina of heart and mind, soul and spirit,

Will we be moved, stretched, strengthened,

Or cry foul?

Can we be trusted,

Are we up for challenges,

Do we live to win or to simply get by.

Capturing God’s Heart – Leadership – Volume 5

This volume look at leadership and how we mature in Christ.

As leaders we must always be developing and growing ourselves.

We cannot lead others in ways that we ourselves have not matured.

And maturing takes time. The development of character takes some work and some focus and a lot of asking the Lord to grow us.

Maturity does not happen by accident.

We must allow and invite change in the way we see and do life.

God’s Oil

P1080445 smallOur hearts can grow tough and brittle. The difficulties and challenges, the trauma’s and tragedies that we all have experienced in some form or fashion, can do a number on our internal reserves.

Often we shrink from these things. And often rightly so. Yet many years ago I learned a very valuable lesson that has stood me in good stead ever since.

It was the birthing day of my oldest child. I’d never been in labour before, was young and not familiar with pushing through pain and quite simply, looking back, did not know the strengths I possessed.

One memory stands out strong. I was laying on my side in the bed, with eyes closed, breathing through each contraction, using a bit of gas as I went along.

At the end of a contraction I opened my eyes to find my doctor standing against the window-sill, simply watching me. Observing how I was handling the pain, how I was coping.

And he spoke to me the most profound words I have ever heard:

“Just let the pain do what it is supposed to do.”

I’ve carried those words ever since, and while I won’t go into the long story here, let me say that I’ve had lots of practice letting pain do what it is supposed to do.

The results have been magnificent.

You see, we have two options when it comes to pain. We can shrink from it, our souls and minds becoming shriveled and pinched, with life shrinking-in and our spirits playing smaller and smaller with each passing day.

Or we can allow pain to wash over our being, exactly as a contraction washes over a woman’s body when in labour, birthing in our lives strength and resilience and flexibility of heart, spirit, mind and body.

Shrinking back from pain results in tightened muscles, anxious anticipation, nervous reactions and wasted energy.

All of which make for brittle living, embittered spirits, exhausted hearts and limited vision. We go from weakness to weakness. Like worn out wine skins, weathered tennis shoes, or neglected car leather, our inner being becomes increasingly fragile.

We cannot contain the glory of God, do not have emotional reserve for miracles or blessings, and we wonder what the heck has gone wrong with our life.

The study of oil is of great interest. Physically we use oil to soften parched skin, add shine to hair, seal wounds and when massaged oil brings relief to sore and weary muscles.

It is the perfect picture of God and us.

I’ve seen firsthand time and time again, how the presence of God soaks into an individuals reality, bringing an oil of sorts to worn-out hearts, restoring sheen to lackluster spirits, and vibrancy to life’s muscle.

Pain need not have the last say in our lives. Inviting God into the atrophied parts of our being, makes for something profound.

I guarantee it
