The Other Side

Tribe Four LivingThere once was a walled garden. It was a very large garden with room for a great many people.

The people within the garden were all there by choice. They had worked to be there, found success in being there, and had created a world within the garden that worked quite well, most of the time.

Like a stepping stone along the path of life, the garden is a well-ordered place with rules and expectations, with authority and structures set in place to maintain and keep the people well.

When people first come to the garden (from the land of chaos), it is a welcome relief to their previous way of life, for in the garden there are well-laid parameters and ways of being. And many fit into this place quite well as it nurtures the development of a persons habits and responsibilities. People grow here.

What has been lost in the garden is any sense of a world beyond. Those in the garden think that the garden is THE place to be. And of course, for many it is… until it isn’t.

As I’ve said, the garden does an amazing job of giving people a place to grow, of finding out what they are good at, of confidence found in many good things brought to the table.

And yet, stay in the garden too long and it becomes a much smaller place. The rules and the authority structures, the should’s and the ought’s (that previously molded the rough edges off of people), become themselves the rough edges.

For what has been forgotten in the garden is that there is a world beyond; a world where the vistas are wide and the freedoms are vast. Where each person walks in the authority and responsibility of their own life. No one answers for any other, and no one is to blame for anything.

Stay too long in the garden and what was meant for good becomes like an ingrown toenail. Stay too long in the garden and the safety and parameters begin to pinch like a much too small shoe.

Because, quite simply, we are meant to outgrow the garden.

Stay too long in the garden and the knowledge of another land quickly dims; sounding like folk-lore and legend and lies.

‘There is no other land. This is it.’

And yet, there are a remnant that know that the success found in the garden is meant to be taken to a bigger world. A remnant that know that the confidence found in the garden is meant to fuel larger passions.

Stay too long in the garden and parameters that once shaped and molded become excuses and increased responsibility falls away for blame and childishness.

“The rules made me do it.”

“I am not allowed.”

“No one gave me permission.”

“This is just the way it is.”

Burn-out is high in the garden. Because the life-blood of vim and vigor is given over to safety and protecting. In the garden everything is under guard: one’s time, energy, passion, just to name a few.

And yet, there is another land, just on the other side of that wall. Yet the wall is high, and few make it over. For the discouragements are many; the warnings and scare-tactics compound the closer one gets to the wall.

For in the garden it is paramount that everyone plays by the rules. And the rules explicitly say, ‘Don’t go outside the garden’.

“The way of life here, the authority and the rules, the safety and the parameters, are the only way. If you leave here, if you refuse to submit and play by these rules, you will be destroyed. You will be confounded and broken down. All that you are good at will be lost. The influence you have will fade away.”

“There are monsters out there. Don’t go that way, you will be destroyed. There are fire-breathing monsters and other very bad things!”

Words are powerful. And for many who hear such words, they are enough to stop them in their tracks where they try to reposition themselves in the garden.

Repositioning themselves within the structures and the expectations of that place (when the whisper declares they are made for so much more) lead many to die slow living deaths.

In contrast, the few who make it over the wall, they find a land that sounds like a fairy-tale, a place more magnificent than they had ever even imagined.

They risked it all on the basis of a few whispers, subtle rumors that the garden keepers tried to squelch, risked to find out just if…

And amazingly, on the other side of the wall….. there are no monsters, there are no cliffs, there are no slippery slopes. Success is not lost but amplified. Influence is not cast away but increases. Fear is shown to be a blown up bully filled with nothing but hot air.

All the bogey-man stories are false!

On the other side of the wall there is land stretching as far as the eye can see. Soft green fields of blowing grasses, sun that shines and gentle winds caressing the face.

One can go in any direction one wants and never stop. The vista is endless, the opportunities abound.

Everything is truly possible.

Here the individual is responsible for him or herself. Here the individual takes full responsibility for their own life. What they want, what they don’t want. How much success, how much freedom, how much vital work. Here the individual has full say to make of his or her life exactly what they want of it.

And here the individual takes on that challenge, gladly and willingly.

In the garden we can always blame someone. The authority, the boss, the friend, the system, the rules, the lack of time, the loss of energy. The other side of the garden there is no one to blame. On the other side, each person stands as his or her own person.

And because of this, here the people give back. They are not overwhelmed. They are not tired. There is enough time for everything. Days carry a rhythm that nurtures and grows. With meaningful work, energy is released and expressed in beautiful and creative ways.

The basics of success and well-formed habits of ethics and integrity found within the garden, literally take wing outside the garden. All of who a person is comes into service of others. And relationships are rich.

For freedom and trust abounds outside the garden. Pinched, protective, narrow, suspicious thinking is replaced by compassion, generosity, and abundant manner of being.

In the garden it was all about what we did, and that begins to shut down after time. Outside the garden, everything flows from who we are, and time simply multiplies our being.

Plan to make your escape today. You will never regret it.

The Veil

P1080387 compressedIn coaching we are quite aware that just behind our knowing, just beyond our understanding, are answers and solutions and provision that we are not yet aware of.

As a coach my role is to facilitate a client in seeing what they could not see before.

Again and again I’ve seen and experienced this, where there seemed to be no answers, and then voila, answers begin falling into place.

When we are blind we cannot see what is right at hand yet just out of reach.

It is the same for ourselves in virtually every area of life.

We see dimly or not at all, and meanwhile a myriad of good things are right at hand, we simply don’t know it!

A week-plus ago I lost my keys. For an entire weeks time I’ve been unable to open my mail-box; mail has been arriving I could not access it, and had no idea what was there.

Meanwhile I’ve been nearing another trip to Uganda. Over the last few weeks since saying out loud, “Yes, this trip appears that it will happen.” each day has been an exercise in waiting on some things, putting action to other things, and simply, almost hourly, laying my fear out before the Lord.

“I am so freaking out right now God!”

Part of the waiting has been the full financial provision for the trip. Then its been wanting someone to stay at my home and with my kids while I am away, and a ton of other little things as well that all needed to be arranged and acquired.

With hundreds of people waiting on me in Uganda, with promises made that I am arriving and these are the weeks and here is the agenda…

And yet with no plane ticket bought, it would seem many moments of insanity,

If it wasn’t so clearly a trip of faith.

(But man has my faith been stretched!)

Every single day has been a day of waiting expectation…

Waiting for just that sense that ‘Yes’, time to buy a ticket…

Waiting for enough money to say spring into action…

Knowing it’ll be there…

Waiting…

Praying…

Continuing on in action in every other way… waiting…

Monday morning I woke with a clear sense of ‘Today I need to finish packing my bag.’

Still no ticket bought…

Packing…

As the early morning turned into mid-morning it became apparent that it was time to buy that ticket, and so it’s been purchased and I’m leaving on Wednesday.

Many of you will in fact be reading this while I am in flight.

With the ticket bought, confirmations back to Uganda made regarding my time of arrival, with my bag packed, I received a replacement key to my mailbox near the end of the day.

And right there, sitting for over a week’s time, right there but not known about, a cheque for over $2000.

I am reminded of the veil.

We are told in the Bible that when Jesus died on the cross that the veil in the temple was ripped in two. The veil being the division between human beings and God. This veil, hiding the secret things of God, was removed through the work of Christ.

Jesus’ coming ripped that veil in two, making a way to know God intimately. God is right there, but we haven’t always seen or perceived or understood.

And along with God comes the provisions and answers and solutions of our lives.

It is all right there.

All the answers.

All the solutions.

All the provision.

Even if we cannot see it, even if we cannot perceive it, even if…

It is all right there, just at hands reach, if only we could see.

A walk of faith is simply walking forward in the midst of NOT seeing the full answers, while simultaneously having the living God open our eyes to see provision and receive understanding in increasing fashion.

My own last weeks of faith walking have felt pretty brutal in a lot of ways. I’ve been stretched and pulled and pushed in ways I never would have chosen.

And yet I know that a walk of faith simply boils down to putting action to conviction, and so I’ve been busy about putting some action in every single day in order to be ready.

And while it all seems upside down (doesn’t one buy a ticket and then get ready instead of getting 100% ready and then buying a ticket!), in the realm of the supernatural where faith walks happen, it makes perfect sense.

For the answers that we cannot yet see, are right there; just behind the veil, just behind our perception, just outside our paradigms and beyond our understanding, but there nonetheless.

If we will only allow our minds and hearts to see in a different way.

A favorite verse of mine, “And we all, with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another.” 2 Corinthians 3:18

A relationship with the living God removes the veils from our faces. We understand things of the spirit that we had beforehand never even imagined.

Christ removed the veil between us and God, and now God removes the veil between us and the provision and answers for our lives.

With unveiled faces, from glory to glory

‘Jesus thank-you so much for removing the barrier between me and God. I accept this work done on my behalf, something I could not do myself, and I welcome your work and presence into my life. God thank-you for making a way that I can see and know and understand all you have for me. I invite your knowing into my life. Teach me to see beyond the veil.’

Jesus Christ: the original coach, opening our paradigms and understanding every single day!

I’m interested in what lays just beyond my understanding, beyond the way I naturally go about life, beyond what I can come up with on my own,

What about you?

You Inspire Me

P1140166 compressedEvery big thing we might be involved with means that we will feel small.

Trust me: In contrast to the grand we feel very inadequate.

It is the nature of extremes and of contrast.

This is why when we must set ourselves aside when we enter into influence.

It is also why we must know ourselves in the first place.

Knowing ourselves is a must; a requisite of life.

What do you love to do?

What fires up your passion and vision?

What brings you to despair?

What dismays you?

Why do you do what you do?

We must know who we are in the world, we must know what we want and what we don’t want, what is important to us and what are our non-negotiables.

If we don’t know our non-negotiables, we won’t know our passions.

If you don’t know what will drive you apart from others, you won’t recognize what will bring you together.

Passion is the name of the game.

Without it, we are androids… hoping and feeling and expecting other’s hopes and feelings and expectations.

Robots, mimicking and parroting what we are taught…

Little room for influence, certainly not a space for lasting relationships.

And before any of us can enter into the big and the grand

That place where we will most certainly feel very small

We must first know who we are and what we are about

Do you know yourself, your needs, your passions, your sorrows?

Do you know what you want and how you want to be in this world?

What do you want?

What do you want?

What do you want?

What do you want?

Answer those with honesty and frankness and tears

And things will begin to shift in your world

It won’t be nice, and it may not be pretty

But it will be meaningful and it will be honest

And others will sit up and take notice

“You inspire me”

… You’re on your way to making this world a better place

Waiting

P1280008 compressedWhat are you waiting for?

Waiting has got to be one of the most difficult things. If there is anything I have learned, it’s that I am not very good at predicting or even accurately sensing how long something might take.

I am pretty good at discerning a lot of things, but not timing.

When things feel IMMINENT it usually means there are a few more years in the waiting.

And that just may be an understatement…

I wonder if we confuse that sense of ‘it must be now’ with simply the passion that happens within ourselves when we grab hold of a vision.

‘It must be now’ can easily turn into years and years.

And not by any mistake or ill-design. Quite the opposite in fact.

The time that it takes from a vision’s inception and from a declared course of action is critical to the success and fruition of what is coming.

The passion required to stay the course, cooperating with a vision, sticking to our guns as we continue to ‘declare’ is exactly the type of character development that visions require.

Waiting is the birth-place of visions set to last the test of time, for if vision can stand the test of waiting, it can stand the tests of time.
